I had no idea that this park had been around for so long. Now, it's not always looked like this. The pics you'll see here are after the park was refurbished into a water filtering system. It's actually kind of neat, as I'm sure you'll see. Within the park are a few different ways to filter the water:
There are 3 or 4 levels of "ponds" that have good algae, plants, lillies, fish, etc, to help neutrilize chemicals and such from the roads as well as prevent trash and other polutants from moving any further downstream.
A prairie/grassland is constructed on one side of the parc to catch overflow from the ponds and from the area during heavy rains and short periods of flooding. In case you didn't know, prairie plants often have very dense root systems, so they're very good at cleansing water.
Waterfalls throughout the system help oxigenate the water in order to help keep the plants and fish alive. Stagnant water just isn't anyone's friend...excpet mosquitos!

that's interesting, and very encouraging. i wonder if other cities have used this? do you know if it has been implemented elsewhere? who came up with it?
